Introduction

Increasing Need for Active Thermal Management Using High Reliability Cooling Fans

As today's electronics designs package increasing amounts of heat into ever smaller spaces, engineers have the challenge of finding effective active thermal management to cool the components.

The field of forced air convection has progressed greatly, and fans and blowers are a common cooling solution. Equally common are products cooled by natural convection. But what about the products that never reached the market because of the consistent lack of a high reliability fan to provide highly reliable active thermal managment? Because system reliability has become critical in evaluating design quality, today's engineers need to be able to determine whether they are specifying components with the right level of reliability. Their task is made more difficult by vendors who obfuscate (or worse, do not publish) their reliability figures.

Abstract

Criteria for Evaluating a High Reliability Fan for Active Thermal Management Requirements

In this paper we will attempt to clear up the confusion surrounding active cooling reliability and propose a framework for comparing cooling devices. We will also present data showing the extremely high reliability of SynJet cooling solutions. Finally, we have prepared a list of questions to ask when choosing the right cooling solution for your active thermal management challenge.
