Passive cooling, the traditional choice of the lighting industry, cannot cool LEDs efficiently enough to allow use of the high power high brightness LEDs needed for general illumination applications.

SynJet LED cooling solution for down light module

In 2008, Nuventix partnered with industry-leader lighting company Philips to bring a custom SynJet LED Cooling for the Philips Fortimo LED DLM system to market. Philips faced a difficult obstacle; their LED down light module (DLM) heatsink was too big for many commercial ceiling lighting installations. Determined to be the leader in bringing energy efficient LED lighting to broader use in commercial and residential markets, Philips found exactly what they needed with Nuventix’ SynJet technology.

  SynJet® fanless air moving technology provides the most reliable active cooling solution available today. The SM16S-CM005-001 is a SynJet cooling module developed for the MR16 lighting form factor. One typical application is cooling a 15W heat source with a 40C delta T, in an LED lighting application. It is designed to fit into the diameter of an MR16 bulb socket.

Chip Coolers

• SynJet® Low Profile Chip Cooler

  SynJet® Fanless Air Cooling technology provides the most reliable active cooling solution available today. The SSCCS-CM005 is a SynJet cooling module developed by Nuventix specifically for low profile chip cooling. The module comes in 4 models from High Performance (19W) to Silent Operation (10W).

One typical SynJet MR16 LED cooler application is the LuxSpot by LedEngine. The Synjet cooler allowed them to have the necessary high power concentrated in a small form factor.

Conformal Cooling Application: LED Thermal Management

Another custom solution exemplified the ease with which SynJet can be integrated into the industrial design of a product. In this application, two concentric circles of flow were created to travel down the ID and OD of a cylindrical heat sink. LED cooling is just one of many possible applications of SynJet's flexible form factor. Form follows function, and SynJet cooling can be shaped into nearly any form.

Another exciting potential application of SynJet technology to manage LED thermals is automotive headlamps. Traditional cooling options generally are not viable because of form factor and reliability requirements. Fortunately, synthetic jets, can provide efficient cooling in a small space and with reliability expectations that can exceed the expected life of the car.
